Over the past few years, the list of period dramas to watch on Netflix has changed dramatically. At the same time, the selections have become more diverse, and the choices have increased. Not to mention, Netflix includes more original content from excellent period dramas all over the world. So, without further delay, here are top 10 sensational period Period Romance Movies on Netflix
Number 1: BRIDGERTON
Bridgerton is the perfect binge-watch this winter. Shondaland is taking us into the world of high society London during the Regency era. The series will undoubtedly be a massive hit, and it’s not a surprise as to why. There’s so much to love about Bridgerton. As we await the grand debut of Bridgerton. Bridgerton follows Daphne Bridgerton, the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family as she makes her debut in Regency London’s competitive marriage market. She hopes to find a true love like her parents, but it’s not as easy as it looks. As her older brother rules out potential suitors, a high society gossip column written by the mysterious Lady Whistledown becomes a thorn in Daphne’s side.
Number 2: ANNE WITH AN E
So this particular period drama on Netflix doesn’t ‘much’ resemble the beloved books. Still, the characters are well-drawn out, and the production quality is excellent. While some may have a hard time with plot points that deviate drastically from the novels, you can still enjoy this period drama as a separate entity. On another Avonlea tidbit, R.H. Thompson (Jasper Dale) plays Matthew Cuthbert to perfection. There are sweet romances, outstanding characterization, and brilliant performances in this adaptation.
Number 3: THE CROWN
This drama follows the political rivalries and romance of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the events that shaped the second half of the 20th century. While the first episode is a little slow, the series picks up from there. The Crown has excellent production quality, gorgeous costumes, sufficient detail for historical accuracy (even when hugely embellishing the royals’ lives), and brilliant performances from all of the actors and actresses involved. Everyone is perfectly cast for these well-known historical and famous figures.
Number 4: CURSED
Cursed is a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue, a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a young mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther.
Number 5: THE GHOST BRIDE
This series is based on a bestselling novel and is a lot of fun. While the costumes aren’t period accurate, you’ll likely appreciate this newer show if you enjoy paranormal romance and historical fantasy. Yangsze Choo’s best selling debut novel has been adapted to the screen in Netflix’s The Ghost Bride. Although it digresses from its source material, this Taiwanese-Malaysian production is still an engaging watch. No, it’s not true to the book per se. But, yes, it does capture the essence of the book: the paranormal creepiness and the central conflict of a young woman trying to find her path in life. A life path she chooses herself, whether out of duty and familial responsibility or following the dictates of her own heart.
Number 6: HIGH SEAS
If you’re a fan of historical mysteries with lots of romance, and you like shows like Grand Hotel, you will adore High Seas. It’s an addictive period romance series with great acting and has stories that will hook you from the first episode. Sadly, Netflix canceled the series after three seasons.
Number 7: MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD
Trust me when I say the series keeps improving over time. When Marvel released the showrunners from having to match up to the Marvel movies, the storytelling improved. Now, while most of the series occurs in the present day, flashbacks show the early days of SHIELD with Agent Carter making an appearance. In the later seasons, there is also time travel. The final season has many stories in the past, and Enver Gjokaj from Agent Carter plays an important role.
Number 8: MR. SUNSHINE
Korean romance-war drama Mr Sunshine released back in 2018, however, it is now streaming on Netflix. The Korean drama stars Lee Byung-hun in the lead role with an extensive star-casr in the period drama set in former Seoul, South Korea, that is Hanseong. Set in the early 20th century, the story is about a Korean origin man turned to become a western soldier essayed by Lee Byung-hun and Kim Tae-Ri’s character who is born and brought up in the most traditional way. The drama was brought together by screenplay writer Kim Eun Sook along with director Lee Eung Bok. The 2018 drama had several songs that struck the right chord with the audience and the composer for most of these songs was Nam Hye Seung.
Number 9: THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT
There are many good movies that have been made about chess. But nothing on film was able to capture the game from a modern perspective as well as “The Queen’s Gambit” did on television.
The 2020 Netflix miniseries has been a runaway scripted hit for the network since it premiered last Oct. 23. “The Queen Gambit” tells the story of chess prodigy Beth Harmon through the tumultuous 1950s and 1960s, from learning the game as an orphaned girl through her rise into a world-renowned champion, defeating drug and alcohol addiction along with several grandmasters along the way.
Number 10: Pride & Prejudice
The 2005 take on Jane Austen’s best-loved novel, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, is all well and good, but it’s a truth universally acknowledged that this brilliant six-part BBC adaptation will always be the definitive on-screen version. Still best known for the scene in which a soggy Mr. Darcy emerges from a lake which you definitely won’t find in the original text. It’s the series that made Colin Firth a national treasure and gained him a mention in Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones’s Diary and a role in the eventual films. Lake-dipping aside, screenwriter Andrew Davies lets the novel’s sparkling dialogue speak for itself, making this a total joy for dedicated Austenites and for more recent initiates.
