The terms “romance novel” and “historical romance” are ambiguous, because the word “romance”, and the associated word “romantic”, have a number of different meanings. In particular, on the one hand, there is the mass-market genre of “fiction dealing with love”
Number 1 Licorice Pizza
In “Licorice Pizza,” a teenage boy perpetually chasing after new business schemes falls for a 20-something woman who’s not quite sure where she’s heading but is up for the ride. Together, Gary Valentine played by Cooper Hoffman and Alana Kane Played by Valley native Alana Haim travel around Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley by car, truck and on foot. Their ventures into showbiz and local politics have them cross paths with a cast of vibrant characters, including a belligerent hairdresser and motorcycle-riding movie star. That’s a very interesting movie, make sure to watch it.

When Tim Lake Played by Domhnall Gleeson is 21, his father Played by Bill Nighy tells him a secret: The men in their family can travel through time. Although he can’t change history, Tim resolves to improve his life by getting a girlfriend. He meets Mary Played by Rachel McAdams, falls in love and finally wins her heart via time travel and a little cunning. However, as his unusual life progresses, Tim finds that his special ability can’t shield him and those he loves from the problems of ordinary life. Let get to the third one.
Number 3 Secretary
Lee Holloway Played by Maggie Gyllenhaal, a young woman with a history of severe emotional problems, is released into the care of her overbearing parents following a stay at a mental institution. She finds work as a secretary for a rigid and demanding attorney, E. Edward Grey Played by James Spader, and starts dating the kind but dull Peter Played by Jeremy Davies. However, Lee soon realizes she’s turned on by Grey’s stern demeanour and begins a sadomasochistic relationship with him.
Number 4 Chocolat
When mysterious Vianne and her child arrive in a tranquil French town in the winter of 1959, no one could have imagined the impact that she and her spirited daughter would have on the community stubbornly rooted in tradition. Within days, she opens an unusual chocolate shop, across the square from the church. Her ability to perceive her customers’ desires and satisfy them with just the right confection, coaxes the villagers to abandon themselves to temptation — just as Lent begins.
Number 5 Ophelia
As a rebellious and motherless child, Ophelia is taken into Elsinore Castle by Queen Gertrude as one of her most trusted ladies-in-waiting. Soon enough, Ophelia captures the affections of the young Prince Hamlet. A passionate romance secretly kindles between the two as the kingdom is on the brink of war amidst its own political intrigue and betrayal. When Hamlet’s father is murdered and the prince begins to unravel, Ophelia sharply navigates the rules of power in Denmark.
Number 6 The World to Come
The World to Come is a 2020 American drama film directed by Mona Fastvold, from a screenplay by Ron Hansen and Jim Shepard, based upon Shepard’s story of the same name. It stars Katherine Waterston, Vanessa Kirby, Christopher Abbott and Casey Affleck, and follows two neighbouring couples battling hardship and isolation in mid-19th century America. It had its world premiere at the 77th Venice International Film Festival on September 6, 2020, where it won the Queer Lion award for best LGBTQ-themed film at the festival. It was released in a limited release on February 12, 2021, followed by a video on demand on March 2, 2021, by Bleecker Street.
Number 7 If Beale Street Could Talk
In early 1970s Harlem, daughter and wife-to-be Tish vividly recalls the passion, respect and trust that have connected her and her artist fiancé Alonzo Hunt, who goes by the nickname Fonny. Friends since childhood, the devoted couple dream of a future together, but their plans are derailed when Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit.
Number 8 Two Moon Junction
Two Moon Junction is a 1988 American erotic thriller romance film written and directed by Zalman King and starring Sherilyn Fenn and Richard Tyson. The original music score is composed by Jonathan Elias. The film is noted for the final film appearances of Burl Ives and Hervé Villechaize, as well as the theatrical film debut of Milla Jovovich.
Number 9 The High Note
Set in the dazzling world of the LA music scene comes the story of Grace Davis, a superstar whose talent, and ego, have reached unbelievable heights. Number 10 Sliding Doors
When Helen played by Gwyneth Paltrow, a London ad executive, is fired from her job and rushes out to catch a train, two scenarios take place. In one, she gets on the train and comes home to find her boyfriend, Gerry played by John Lynch, in bed with another woman. In the second, she misses the train and arrives after the woman has left. In the first scenario, Helen dumps Gerry, finds a new man and gradually improves her life. In the second, she becomes suspicious of Gerry’s fidelity and grows miserable.
