Top 10 Shows like Bridgerton on Netflix

As far as great period dramas go, Bridgerton Checks all of the boxes. You may want to keep the party going after watching all eight episodes of the Netflix series. The only problem is Season two of Bridgerton isn’t coming out for quite some time. Knowing that we’ve compiled a solid list of historical dramas we know You’ll love to watch In the meantime. But before we start make sure to hit that like button and Subscribe to The Black Slate Studio.

Number 1: Vanity Fair

Born to poor parents, Becky Sharp (Reese Witherspoon) has always aspired to be a member of England’s upper classes. Leaving her boarding school and best friend, Amelia (Romola Garai), behind, Becky associates herself with the Crawleys, eventually falling in love with their son, Rawdon (James Purefoy). The marriage is happy at first, but deteriorates when Rawdon’s fortune dwindles. Becky is then supported by the lecherous Marquess of Steyne (Gabriel Byrne), whose motives are less than pure.

Number 2: The Great

The Great is a, follow-up to Bridgerton, particularly if you’re into the unexpected humor of Bridgerton. The series comes from screenwriter Tony McNamara, who previously proved that period pieces could be fun with his Oscar-nominated script for the film The Favorite, and follows a young Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning) as she’s shipped to Russia to marry Peter III (Nicholas Hoult) and ultimately overthrow him and rule on her own when her fantasies of a royally good time are crushed. It’s not as steamy as Bridgerton, but it is a whole lot funnier, especially Hoult, who shines as the spoiled doofus bro emperor.

Number 3: Dickinson

If Bridgerton was your first binge of a period piece that’s been unstuffed from the rigid stuffiness of the typical old-timey drama, then Dickinson is like a direct wormhole between today’s millennials and 19th century author Emily Dickinson. Emily, played by the wonderful up-and-comer Hailee Steinfeld, has aspirations to become a famous writer, while her traditional parents (Toby Huss and Jane Krakowski) prefer she settle down and be a housewife. The timeless story and era-appropriate clothing and sets are injected with modernity through present-day music (full on blasting tracks, not the undercover string quartet covers that Bridgerton did) and dialogue (pretty sure they didn’t say “stoked” back then), adding a fresh coat of paint to a genre otherwise reserved for the olds. Also of extreme importance, Wiz Khalifa appears as Emily’s obsession, Death.

Number 4: Poldark

In this film version of the British miniseries, set in the 19th century, the Poldark family is plagued by both new and old problems. Ross Poldark (John Bowe), who started a family with his servant Demelza (Mel Martin), must leave home to fight against the French. The family must also protect themselves from George (Michael Attwell), the head of the Warleggan family, with whom the Poldarks have longstanding issues. Meanwhile, Clowance (Kelly Reilly) must decide between two romantic paths.

Number 5: Gentleman Jack

Another period drama about love in 1800s England, HBO’s Gentleman Jack thankfully shows an alternative to the heteronormative romance and sexuality that dominates many of the other shows on this list. In a stirring performance, Suranne Jones portrays Anne Lister, a real historical figure who was a prominent landowner and industrialist. She also happened to be a lesbian, and courts her fellow landowner Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle) while recording the courtship through a series of cryptic messages that only she can decode.

Number 6: Gossip Girl

In the same way that Clueless is a wholly modernized remake of Jane Austen’s Emma, so too is Gossip Girl basically the mid-aughts version of Bridgerton. There’s an ensemble cast of characters causing scandals and falling in love, all encircling a core family-like group of friends, and all documented by an anonymous gossipmonger.

Number 7: Harlots

Taking place just a few years before Bridgerton and in a decidedly different part of London, Harlots follows a brothel owner’s struggles to singlehandedly provide a better life for her daughters. The series places women at the forefront—during a time in which they were all too often shunted to the sidelines—and also takes a very clear-eyed and empowering view of sex work, normalizing and destigmatizing the “oldest profession.”

Number 8: Downton Abbey

The beloved Crawleys and their intrepid staff prepare for the most important moment of their lives. A royal visit from the king and queen of England soon unleashes scandal, romance and intrigue — leaving the future of Downton hanging in the balance. The series takes place a century later than Bridgerton, but is just as jam-packed with society scandals, historical references, and a blunt take on the inherent classism of the British aristocracy.

Number 9: The Pursuit of Love

The Pursuit of Love is a three-episode miniseries written and directed by Emily Mortimer that stars Lily James and Emily Beecham as cousins and BFFs who come of age between the World Wars and drool over boys together, despite their wildly different personalities. Like many period pieces recently — especially Bridgerton. The story follows the adventures of the charismatic and fearless Linda Radlett, and her best friend/cousin Fanny Logan. Consumed by a desire for love and marriage, they both seek out the ideal husband.

Number 10: The Cook of Castamar

The show on this list that’s probably most like Bridgerton — on paper, at least — is the new Spanish series The Cook of Castmar, which debuted on Netflix in July 2021 after airing in its native country earlier in the year. Both shows are set in the days of wigs and extravagant dress, and both are awfully frisky, with lust the preferred hobby of its wealthy, privileged characters.

Modern Sad Romantic Movies

Do you remember those sad, romantic movies that make you cry every time you watch them? There is nothing we love more than a good romantic story. But not every film about love has a happy ending. There are a lot of romantic movies that are sad enough to make us curl up in a ball and cry for a few hours, so here are the top 10 modern sad romantic movies guaranteed to bring you to tears every time.

Number 1: A Walk to Remember:

Set in North Carolina, “A Walk To Remember” follows the rite of passage of a jaded, aimless high school senior (Shane West) who falls in love with a guileless young woman (Mandy Moore) he and his friends once scorned. The two develop a powerful and inspirational relationship in which they discover truths that take most people a lifetime to learn.

Number 2: Shakespeare In Love:

Tale about a fictional relationship between William Shakespeare and a young woman who poses as a man in order to star in one of the writer’s plays. Suffering from writer’s block, Shakespeare is in need of a new muse. He soon finds inspiration in the form of a beautiful female aristocrat, but her daring determination to act in his play puts their already forbidden relationship on even more dangerous ground.

Number3: A Star is Born:

Seasoned musician Jackson Maine discovers — and falls in love with — struggling artist Ally. She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer until Jackson coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jackson fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons.

Number 4: Call Me By Your Name

The movie that propelled Timotheé Chalamet into stardom and into all of our hearts. Call Me By Your Name is set in the most idyllic place for a summer romance, a small villa in northern Italy. The angst will have you at the edge of your seat the whole movie, but that ending. No spoilers, but you will definitely be crying along with one of the main characters while Sufjan Stevens croons in the background.

Number 5: Blue Valentine

Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams) live a quiet life in a modest neighborhood. To the casual observer, everything appears normal, if a bit subdued. But a closer examination reveals a couple caught in a downward spiral. They appear to have the world at their feet at the outset of the relationship. However, his lack of ambition and her retreat into self-absorption cause potentially irreversible cracks in their marriage.

Number 6: Me Before You

Emilia Clarke absolutely dazzles in this movie, and we can’t help but fall in love with her. She works as a caretaker for a paralyzed man who doesn’t really have the will to keep on living, played by the beautiful Sam Claflin. We watch them fall head over heels for each other, only to be hit with one of the saddest endings to ever exist in Hollywood. We’re pretty sure we cried ourselves into oblivion.

Number 7: Before We Go

This little indie film didn’t make a huge splash in theaters, but it’s a memorable love story all the same. Chris Evans and Alice Eve are two strangers who end up going on an unexpected overnight adventure throughout New York City together, and although they have palpable chemistry (especially as a performing jazz duo), they’re just not meant to be together at the end. We can barely stand seeing them say goodbye.

Number 8: Titanic

Would any list of sad, romantic movies be complete without Titanic? We don’t think so. Chances are you’ve watched this a million times and already know how it ends, but you still can’t help but shed a tear when Rose (Kate Winslet) tells Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) she’ll never let go.

Number 9: Boys Don’t Cry

Young female-to-male transgender Brandon Teena (Hilary Swank) leaves his hometown under threat when his ex-girlfriend’s brother discovers that he’s biologically female. Resettling in the small town of Falls City, Nebraska, Brandon falls for Lana (Chloë Sevigny), an aspiring singer, and begins to plan for their future together. But when her ex-convict friends, John (Peter Sarsgaard) and Tom (Brendan Sexton III), learn Brandon’s secret, things change very quickly.

Number 10: Remember Me

Remember Me seems like a basic love story starring Tyler (Robert Pattinson) has had a strained relationship with his father (Pierce Brosnan) since a family tragedy. Rebellious and troubled, he thinks no one can understand his pain, then he meets Ally (Emilie de Ravin). Her warmth and spirit soon begin to heal him, and they fall in love. But just when Tyler begins to rediscover happiness and meaning in his life, emerging secrets threaten their romance.

Bridgerton’s Real Life Cast Couples

Bridgerton is the ideal marathon watch this colder time of year. Shondaland is bringing us into the universe of high society London during the Regency period. Bridgerton is brimming with the show, sentiment, interest, and a lot of exceptionally hot scenes. The series will without a doubt be a monstrous hit, and it’s anything but a shock regarding why. There’s such a great amount to cherish about Bridgerton. As we anticipate the fantastic introduction of Bridgerton, HollywoodLife has gotten together all you require to think about this stunning new series. Here, we have represented Bridgerton cast with their real-life partners and relationships. So watch the video till the end.

Number 1:-  Ben Miller (Lord Featherington)

In Bridgerton, he portrays Lord Featherington – a meek man ruled by his wife and his gambling addiction. Ultimately, his penchant for gambling gets his family out of trouble for a brief moment – until he is (spoiler alert!) killed and the money stolen, leaving the Featherington women to fend for themselves. Miller’s own married life has not been as turbulent. Between 2004 and 2011, he was married to fellow thesp Belinda Stewart-Wilson. Since 2013 he has been happily married to Jessica Parker, daughter of British guitarist Alan Parker.

Number 2:-  Ruth Gemmell (Violet Bridgerton)

Ruth Gemmell stars as Lady Violet Bridgerton, family matriarch and mother to an impressive eight children. Violet is arguably one of the most compassionate mother figures in the whole series – even if she fails to provide Daphne with proper sex education. By contrast to the other mothers in the series – such as Lady Portia Featherington – Violet truly wants what’s best for her children. She encourages Daphne to marry for love – just like she did – and supports her during the Duke’s courtship.

Number 3:- Emma Naomi (Alice Mondrich)

In the show, Emma Naomi plays Alice Mondrich, Will Mondrich’s sweet-natured, loyal, and confident wife. Alice, like her husband, is a good friend of the Duke of Hastings and is seen to support him on numerous occasions throughout the series. Alice and Will end the series in a precarious position, as Will lets one of his boxing opponents defeat him so as to cash in on a bet that Lord Featherington makes on him losing. The implication is that Alice will not be happy when she finds out what her husband has done. Naomi, like a lot of the cast, prefers to keep her love life out of the spotlight, and it’s unclear as to whether she’s single or taken at present. Her oldest Instagram post is from December 2020 and mainly features snaps of the Bridgerton cast, with no partner in sight.

Number 4:- Jessica Madsen (Cressida Cowper)

Cressida Cowper is another minor but important character. In fact, she’s the main reason why the Duke and Daphne get married. Played by Jessica Madsen, Cressida locks horns with Daphne on multiple occasions during their season as debutantes. The two clash when Daphne briefly steals away Cressida’s chosen suitor – Prince Friedrich of Prussia – in a bid to make the Duke jealous. Cressida retaliates by blackmailing Daphne after witnessing her and the Duke in a compromising position. Madsen has been luckier in love than Cressida and is currently dating a man named Benji Philipson. Not much is known about the pair, but judging from Madsen’s Instagram the pair have been together for several years and are still looking truly loved-up.

Number 5:-  Martins Imhangbe (Will Mondrich)

Martins Imhangbe’s character Will Mondrich is a relatively minor role in the series, but an important one all the same. Mondrich acts as the Duke’s confidante and is one of his closest friends, as well as an esteemed boxer. Mondrich is largely portrayed as a morally astute man, and often nudges the Duke towards the right course of action. But (spoiler alert!) – his morality is revealed to be a little more complex when he accepts a bribe from Lord Featherington. Mondrich purposely loses a fight so that Featherington can cash in on a huge bet and give the boxer half the winnings. While Mondrich is happily married to his wife Alice in the show, in real life, Imhangbe is yet to publicly confirm his relationship status.

Number 6:- . Harriet Cains (Philippa Featherington)

Harriet Cains features as the middle Featherington sister in the show. Just like Penelope and Prudence, Philippa Featherington is pretty unlucky in love. That said, Philippa has a bit more luck than either of her sisters, and manages to catch the eye of one Mr. Finch. However, a brief word with Lord Featherington ends up driving Mr. Finch away from Philippa as the family head divulges that he’s spent his daughters’ dowries. Things looked up for Philippa as her father managed to secure some more funds and placate Mr Finch. But – spoiler alert – things took a turn for the worse again once Lord Featherington was murdered and his money stolen. Is Harriet Cains’ love life less bleak in real life? We can assume so, but unfortunately, there’s nothing concrete on whether she’s in a relationship or not.

Number 7:-  Phoebe Dyvenor (Daphne Bridgerton)

Phoebe Dyvenor has previously appeared in British TV shows such as Waterloo Road and Dickensian. But it’s clear Bridgerton has been something of a breakthrough for the talented young actress. Her on-screen romance with the Duke has fuelled rumours that she’s in a relationship with her co-star Regé-Jean Page – but these are just rumours, it seems. It appears that Dyvenor is single. Back in 2014 she publicly confirmed her relationship with then-boyfriend, recruitment executive Simon Merill. Most recently, she was linked to Skins actor Simon Teale, but the pair called it quits back in 2018. Since then there’s been radio silence on Dyvenor’s love life, leading us to assume that she’s a single lady.

19th Century Drama Movies

Welcome back to Black Slate Studios. During the 19th-century life was transformed by the Industrial Revolution. At first, it caused many problems but in the late 19th-century life became more comfortable for ordinary people. Meanwhile, Britain became the world’s first urban society. By 1851 more than half the population lived in towns. Here is the list of top10 Movies from the period of the 19th Century.

True History of the Kelly Gang:- A star vehicle for young character actor George MacKay also the director of “Pride” and a visual tour-de-force that gets high on its own look and sound, “True History of the Kelly Gang” seems at first as if it’s going to be one of those super-bloody, super-nasty Westerns that’s so macho that the images might as well sprout chest hair. But it quickly settles into a groove that’s more of a hyper-intense lament for men and women who’ve been cursed to spend their lives chafing at the roles that their societies have saddled them with, as well as a sardonic look at the damage that colonialism does to the psyches of the colonized.

Ammonite:- Ammonite is a 2020 romantic drama film written and directed by Francis Lee. The film is loosely inspired by the life of British palaeontologist Mary Anning, played by Kate Winslet. The film centres on a speculative romantic relationship between Anning and Charlotte Murchison, played by Saoirse Ronan. Gemma Jones, James McArdle, Alec Secăreanu, and Fiona Shaw also star. The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 11 September 2020. It was released in Australia on 14 January 2021 by Transmission Films and in the United Kingdom on 26 March 2021 by Lionsgate.

A Fortunate Man:- A Fortunate Man played by Danish: Lykke-Per is a 2018 Danish drama film directed by Bille August. In August 2018, it was one of three films shortlisted to be the Danish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards. The film is based upon the eight-volume novel translated into English as Lucky Per, written by Danish Nobel Prize-winning author Henrik Pontoppidan. It was originally published between 1898 and 1904. The film was released on American Netflix streaming on 19 April 2019.

Emma:- The film follows the story of Miss Emma Woodhouse played by Anya Taylor-Joy, a wealthy and elegant young woman living with her father in Regency-era England. Something of a ‘queen bee’ in her sleepy little town, Emma amuses herself with matchmaking and meddles in the romantic lives of those closest to her. Emma must navigate her way through the challenges of growing up, friendship strife and misguided matches before she can recognise the love that has been there all along and earn her ‘happily ever after’. It also stars Johnny Flynn, Josh O’Connor, Callum Turner, Mia Goth, Miranda Hart, and Bill Nighy.

The World to Come:- The World to Come is a 2020 American drama film directed by Mona Fastvold, from a screenplay by Ron Hansen and Jim Shepard, based upon Shepard’s story of the same name. It stars Katherine Waterston, Vanessa Kirby, Christopher Abbott and Casey Affleck, and follows two neighbouring couples battling hardship and isolation in mid-19th century America. It had its world premiere at the 77th Venice International Film Festival on September 6, 2020, where it won the Queer Lion award for best LGBTQ-themed film at the festival. It was released in a limited release on February 12, 2021, followed by a video on demand on March 2, 2021, by Bleecker Street.

The Professor And The Madman:- Based on the 1998 book `The Surgeon of Crowthorne’ by Simon Winchester, the life of Professor James Murray is portrayed as he begins work on compiling words for the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary in the mid-19th century. As he led the overseeing committee, the professor received over 10,000 entries from one source in particular – a patient at Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum, Dr William Minor.

Harriet:- Harriet is a 2019 American biographical film directed by Kasi Lemmons, who also wrote the screenplay with Gregory Allen Howard. It stars Cynthia Erivo as abolitionist Harriet Tubman, with Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn, and Janelle Monáe in supporting roles. A biography about Harriet Tubman had been in the works for years, with several actresses, including Viola Davis, rumoured to star. Erivo was cast in February 2017, and much of the cast and crew joined the following year. Filming took place in Virginia from October to December 2018. Harriet had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2019, and was theatrically released in the United States on November 1, 2019, by Focus Features.

Curiosa:- A not-exactly-torrid, not particularly romantic “torrid romance,” “Curiosa” takes us back to 19th century Paris, when the camera and indoor plumbing were new, and sexual mores seemed in a mad rush to catch up. This French melodrama, loosely based on the surviving writings and photos of its two principals, takes its title from a term of the day. A “Curiosa,” an opening title tells us, “is an erotic object or photograph.” Marie, played by Noémie Merlant, is the oldest of three sisters, and the great beauty of the trio that includes Louise played by Mathilde Warnier and Helene played by Mélodie Richard. Family friend Pierre played by Niels Schneider, flirts and keeps them under his lusty gaze, which the sisters, especially Marie, notices.

The Aeronauts:- In 1862 headstrong scientist James Glaisher and wealthy young widow Amelia Wren mount a balloon expedition to fly higher than anyone in history. As their perilous ascent reduces their chances of survival, the unlikely duo soon discovers things about themselves and each other that help both of them find their place in the world.

Far from the Madding Crowd:- The film is set in about 1870 in Britain. While Bathsheba Everdene played by Carey Mulligan is working on her aunt’s farm in Dorset, she meets a neighbouring farmer, Gabriel Oak played by Matthias Schoenaerts. As they get to know one another, he proposes, but the headstrong Bathsheba declines, saying she is too independent. One night a new sheepdog chases Gabriel’s entire flock off a cliff. After settling his debts, he is penniless and leaves in search of work. In contrast, Bathsheba inherits a farm from her uncle and leaves to take charge of it.
