From superhero movies to spy sagas to epic franchises like The Fast and the Furious, action movies are a Hollywood staple, especially during the spring and summer. Here’s a list of the best action movies coming out in 2021 that you’ll most definitely want to catch.

Number 1: ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is an upcoming American hero film including the Marvel Comics character Venom, delivered by Columbia Pictures in partnership with Marvel and Tencent Pictures. Conveyed by Sony Pictures Releasing, it is proposed to be the second film in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters and the spin-off of Venom (2018). This examination of a famous scandal from the 1970s explores the relationship between Barbara Baekeland (Julianne Moore) and her only son, Antony (Eddie Redmayne). Barbara, a lonely social climber unhappily married to the wealthy but remote plastics heir Brooks Baekeland (Stephen Dillane), dotes on Antony, who is homosexual. As Barbara tries to “cure” Antony of his sexuality, sometimes by seducing him herself the groundwork is laid for a murderous tragedy.

Barbara Covett (Judi Dench), a veteran teacher at St. George’s, senses a kindred spirit in Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett), the school’s new art teacher. The younger woman’s charisma intensely draws in the older, and the two become friends. Then Barbara learns of Sheba’s affair with a teenage student and becomes the keeper of the explosive secret.

Interracial couple Richard and Mildred Loving fell in love and were married in 1958. They grew up in Central Point, a small town in Virginia that was more integrated than surrounding areas in the American South. Yet it was the state of Virginia, where they were making their home and starting a family, that first jailed and then banished them. Richard and Mildred relocated with their children to the inner city of Washington, D.C., but the family ultimately tries to find a way back to Virginia.

Dissatisfied with the way her own life is playing out, New York-based Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) becomes obsessed with the romance between American divorcee Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) and England’s Edward VIII (James D’Arcy) when Sotheby’s holds an auction of the royal couple’s belongings. Wally is especially drawn to Wallis’ side of the story, and as certain events transpire in her life, the line between fantasy and reality begins to blur.

Number 9. Portrait of a lady on a Fire

Number 1: BRIDGERTON

Bridgerton is the perfect binge-watch this winter. Shondaland is taking us into the world of high society London during the Regency era. The series will undoubtedly be a massive hit, and it’s not a surprise as to why. There’s so much to love about Bridgerton. As we await the grand debut of Bridgerton. Bridgerton follows Daphne Bridgerton, the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family as she makes her debut in Regency London’s competitive marriage market. She hopes to find a true love like her parents, but it’s not as easy as it looks. As her older brother rules out potential suitors, a high society gossip column written by the mysterious Lady Whistledown becomes a thorn in Daphne’s side.

Number 2: ANNE WITH AN E

So this particular period drama on Netflix doesn’t ‘much’ resemble the beloved books. Still, the characters are well-drawn out, and the production quality is excellent. While some may have a hard time with plot points that deviate drastically from the novels, you can still enjoy this period drama as a separate entity. On another Avonlea tidbit, R.H. Thompson (Jasper Dale) plays Matthew Cuthbert to perfection. There are sweet romances, outstanding characterization, and brilliant performances in this adaptation.

Number 3: THE CROWN

This drama follows the political rivalries and romance of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the events that shaped the second half of the 20th century. While the first episode is a little slow, the series picks up from there. The Crown has excellent production quality, gorgeous costumes, sufficient detail for historical accuracy (even when hugely embellishing the royals’ lives), and brilliant performances from all of the actors and actresses involved. Everyone is perfectly cast for these well-known historical and famous figures.

Number 4: CURSED

Cursed is a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue, a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a young mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther.

Number 5: THE GHOST BRIDE

This series is based on a bestselling novel and is a lot of fun. While the costumes aren’t period accurate, you’ll likely appreciate this newer show if you enjoy paranormal romance and historical fantasy. Yangsze Choo’s best selling debut novel has been adapted to the screen in Netflix’s The Ghost Bride. Although it digresses from its source material, this Taiwanese-Malaysian production is still an engaging watch. No, it’s not true to the book per se. But, yes, it does capture the essence of the book: the paranormal creepiness and the central conflict of a young woman trying to find her path in life. A life path she chooses herself, whether out of duty and familial responsibility or following the dictates of her own heart.

Number 6: HIGH SEAS

If you’re a fan of historical mysteries with lots of romance, and you like shows like Grand Hotel, you will adore High Seas. It’s an addictive period romance series with great acting and has stories that will hook you from the first episode. Sadly, Netflix canceled the series after three seasons.

Number 7: MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD

Trust me when I say the series keeps improving over time. When Marvel released the showrunners from having to match up to the Marvel movies, the storytelling improved. Now, while most of the series occurs in the present day, flashbacks show the early days of SHIELD with Agent Carter making an appearance. In the later seasons, there is also time travel. The final season has many stories in the past, and Enver Gjokaj from Agent Carter plays an important role.

Number 8: MR. SUNSHINE

Korean romance-war drama Mr Sunshine released back in 2018, however, it is now streaming on Netflix. The Korean drama stars Lee Byung-hun in the lead role with an extensive star-casr in the period drama set in former Seoul, South Korea, that is Hanseong. Set in the early 20th century, the story is about a Korean origin man turned to become a western soldier essayed by Lee Byung-hun and Kim Tae-Ri’s character who is born and brought up in the most traditional way. The drama was brought together by screenplay writer Kim Eun Sook along with director Lee Eung Bok. The 2018 drama had several songs that struck the right chord with the audience and the composer for most of these songs was Nam Hye Seung.

Number 9: THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT

There are many good movies that have been made about chess. But nothing on film was able to capture the game from a modern perspective as well as “The Queen’s Gambit” did on television.

The 2020 Netflix miniseries has been a runaway scripted hit for the network since it premiered last Oct. 23. “The Queen Gambit” tells the story of chess prodigy Beth Harmon through the tumultuous 1950s and 1960s, from learning the game as an orphaned girl through her rise into a world-renowned champion, defeating drug and alcohol addiction along with several grandmasters along the way.

Number 10: Pride & Prejudice

The 2005 take on Jane Austen’s best-loved novel, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, is all well and good, but it’s a truth universally acknowledged that this brilliant six-part BBC adaptation will always be the definitive on-screen version. Still best known for the scene in which a soggy Mr. Darcy emerges from a lake which you definitely won’t find in the original text. It’s the series that made Colin Firth a national treasure and gained him a mention in Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones’s Diary and a role in the eventual films. Lake-dipping aside, screenwriter Andrew Davies lets the novel’s sparkling dialogue speak for itself, making this a total joy for dedicated Austenites and for more recent initiates.

Number 2: Let It Snow

If you’re in the mood for some seasonal romance, Netflix delivered a bit of a Love Actually for the teen set with Let It Snow, a breezy holiday rom-com that finds a series of overlapping love stories on one fateful Christmas-season snow day. It’s a sweet film from top-to-tail, as interested in the dramas of teen friendship and domestic struggles as it is the blossoming romances, and it’s filled with delightful performances from a knockout cast of young up-and-comers.

Number 3: About Time

The 2013 film About Time is not just an absolute gem of a romantic comedy, it’s also one of the best time travel movies ever made. Oh yeah, and it’s a total tearjerker. Written and directed by Richard Curtis, the film stars Domhnall Gleeson as a young man who learns at the age of 21, from his father (Bill Nighy), that the men in their family have the ability to time travel. This comes in handy when he misses his chance with a charismatic American girl (Rachel McAdams) and goes back to the night they first met to start their relationship off right. But what begins as a delightful, grounded, and romantic romp soon turns emotional.

Number 4: Set It Up

If you’re looking for a charming romantic comedy, but don’t want to rewatch something from a previous decade for the umpteenth time, you should definitely give Claire Scanlon’s charming Set It Up a look. The plot follows two beleaguered assistants (Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell) who decide to set up their bosses (Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs, respectively) in order to just get some precious free time away from their demanding jobs. However, with all their scheming, they start to fall for each other. You can see the romcom beats coming from a mile away, but they’re done so well and so effectively that you won’t mind.

Number 5: The Incredible Jessica James

Jessica Williams still hasn’t got the breakout she deserves since her tenure on The Daily Show, but the indie romcom The Incredible Jessica James is the first time since then we’ve got to see her step into a lead role and she just lights up the screen. Now, the character of Jessica James may not be quite as incredible as the title leads you to believe she’s actually pretty selfish and naive  but she’s passionate, raw and ambitious, and Williams makes you love her in spite of her faults. A supporting performance from the constantly charming Chris O’Dowd certainly doesn’t hurt, and the two have electric chemistry as they try to navigate the waters of heartbreak together toward something healthy and new

Number 6: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Edgar Wright’s adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s outstanding comic didn’t find much of an audience upon its release, but over the years it has grown into a cult classic. The movie follows Scott Pilgrim (Cera), a sweet if slightly selfish and misguided young man who falls for delivery girl Ramona Flowers (Winstead). He can only continue to date her if he defeats her seven evil exes. Scott’s comfortable with the video game framework, but the film is really about two people discovering they have to get over their own baggage if they’re going to find new love. Wright decorates the whole picture with video game tropes and fun little nods, but never loses sight of the core romantic story.

Number 7: Always Be My Maybe

Netflix brought the romcom back in a big way with 2018’s Set It Up, and the streaming service’s 2019 effort Always Be My Maybe is similarly charming and delightful. Co-written by and starring Randall Park and Ali Wong, the film follows a pair of teenage best friends who have since drifted apart and are pushed together once more in adulthood, even though their lives have followed very different paths. Park and Wong are dynamite together, and the film takes time to breathe with some well-paced dramatic sequences.

Number 8: Holidate

The latest Netflix original of the season stars Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey as two people who make a pact to be each other’s plus ones to the holidays all year long. But with their natural chemistry, it doesn’t take long for their faux-relationship to get complicated.

Number 9: To All the Boys: Always and Forever

The third and final film in Netflix’s mega-popular To All the Boys franchise sees Lara Jean and her boyfriend, dreamboat Peter Kavinsky, at a crossroads. Newly returned from a life-changing trip to Korea and staring down her senior year, Lara Jean considers her college plans, with and without her beau. Fans of the series will be deeply satisfied by this winning, winsome conclusion.

Number 10: Mr. Right

In this deliciously over the top film, the romcom genre gets twisted up with action movie tropes. Anna Kendrick stars as Martha McKay, a woman characteristically unlucky in love, who soon discovers that her new beau (Sam Rockwell) is a hitman gone rogue. Screwball and silly, marrying cotton candy romance with violent killings, Mr. Right lands on our list thanks to the electric chemistry between its two leads.

Zombie movies have undergone a real transformation over the years. But the concept of the zombie hasn’t changed all that much. Romero said that zombies represented a people’s reaction to change how a human contends with the reversal of nature’s law: all things move toward death. So whatever your immortal fear or apocalypse kink, here are the best zombie movies to stream on Netflix right now.

Number 1: Alive

Fans of zombie cinema were hotly anticipating at least one South Korean zombie feature this year: Peninsula, the sequel to the much-loved Train to Busan was heavily hyped, but ultimately fell far short of the original. Thankfully, though, there was another Korean zombie flick waiting in the wings to step into its place, in the form of the significantly more successful (if modest) #Alive. Fans of the original World War Z novel will certainly find this story familiar, as it’s suspiciously similar to one of that book’s better-loved passages, about a young gamer/hacker in Japan who is so deeply engrossed in the web, he fails to notice the world descending into a zombie apocalypse around him, before finally being forced to unplug and go on the run.

Number 2: Ravenous

Genre geeks didn’t seem to take a lot of notice of Ravenous, beyond its Best Canadian Film award at the Toronto International Film Festival—perhaps the result of an “indie zombie drama” subgenre that seems to have run its course through films such as The Battery, and perhaps because it’s performed in French rather than English. Regardless, this is a competently crafted little drama thriller for the zombie completist, full of excellent performances from no-name actors and an intriguing take on the results of zombification. The infected here at times seem like your standard Romero ghouls, but they’re also a bit more lost souls who have hung onto some kind of strange, rudimentary culture all their own.

Number 3: Cargo

We’ve had enough takes on worldwide zombie apocalypses to last undead enthusiasts long through, well, a worldwide zombie apocalypse. Of those takes, few are inspired, a few more are watchable though workmanlike and most are dreck, whether in TV or movie form. Cargo, a collaborative directing effort between Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling, falls somewhere in between “inspired” and “workmanlike,” which is to say it’s well worth seeking out on Netflix if you’ve a powerful need to watch twitching, walking corpses menace a family trying to survive while isolated in Australia’s Outback. Martin Freeman plays Andy, stubborn husband to his wife, Kay (Susie Porter), and loving dad to their daughter, Rosie; he’s piloting a houseboat to safer shores, or that’s the hope.

Number 4: Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island

After a decade in frequent syndication, Scooby-Doo roared back into popularity among children of the 1990s, which culminated in Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, the first in a prolific series of direct-to-video movies. That’s about where the similarities to the original animated TV series end, though, because Zombie Island represented something wholly unexpected: a legitimate take on horror cinema, via Scooby-Doo. After decades of unmasking unscrupulous land developers and treasure hunters, the idea to put real supernatural creatures into a Scooby-Doo story was a rather brilliant one, and Zombie Island is complemented by what is undoubtedly the best animation the series had ever seen, courtesy of Japanese studio Mook Animation. It gave fans something they never knew they needed, fantastically atmospheric gothic horror vibes.

Number 5: The Girl With All the Gifts

M.R. Carey’s novel The Girl With All the Gifts plays coy with its zombie (or “hungries,” as they’re called here) trappings, drawing readers in for dozens of pages before revealing its flesh-eating premise. The film adaptation, released last year in the U.K. before making its U.S. debut in February, bares its teeth right away. If viewers aren’t burnt out on zombie offerings (and they shouldn’t be, with such recent standouts as 2016’s Korean hit Train to Busan proving that the genre has plenty of life left in it), they’ll find that The Girl With All the Gifts is less concerned with the initial overwhelming outbreak than with the moral lines survivors in the military and scientific community are willing to cross.

Number 6: The Evil Dead

Infamously pieced together from $350,000 and an exceptional amount of goodwill, The Evil Dead, when looking back at it, seems to have created a kind of horror unto itself. Sam Raimi’s debut, of course, is notable for so much more than that: like how it was edited by Joel Coen; or how Stephen King’s rabid interest caught the attention of a major studio, giving Raimi and close bud Bruce Campbell the chance to pour everything they knew about slashers, slapstick, camp, pulp and fantasy into Evil Dead II, a kind of sequel/reboot hybrid. But the real gauge of The Evil Dead’s tenor is perhaps best exemplified by the fact that its 2013 remake was something of a sickening feast for gore-hounds.

Number 7: Zombieland

Ruben Fleischer’s Zombieland is one of the most beloved horror-comedies to be released over the past decade. In addition to its 89% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently boasts a 7.6/10 IMDB-rating and 73/100 Metascore. Starring Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin, the film revolves around a foursome of strangers who band together in order to survive a hyper-violent zombie apocalypse. With undead ghouls abound everywhere they turn, the quartet sets out to reach the so-called safe haven Pacific Playland theme park.

Number 8: RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE

The fourth installment of the hugely successful RESIDENT EVIL franchise, RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE is again based on the wildly popular video game series, and will this time be presented in 3-D. In a world ravaged by a virus infection, turning its victims into the Undead, ALICE (Milla Jovovich), continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety. Her deadly battle with the Umbrella Corporation reaches new heights, but Alice gets some unexpected help from an old friend. A new lead that promises a safe haven from the Undead takes them to Los Angeles, but when they arrive the city is overrun by thousands of Undead – and Alice and her comrades are about to step into a deadly trap.

A long time later, Ted recruits Pat Healy played by Matt Dillon to find Mary so he can reconnect with her. Pat misleads Ted about Mary and he discovers all that he can about her to fool her into dating him. Ted goes to meet Mary and needs to weave through the net of lies that Pat and Mary’s companion Tucker played by Lee Evans have woven to attempt to prevail upon her.
