Top Sad Romance Movies

Not all love stories have happy endings. And that’s real life! We rounded up our favorite sad romances to watch when we need to wallow, or need to feel better about our own love lives. If you’re ready, Here are our picks for top sad romantic movies.

Number 1: Carol

Cate Blanchett is a closeted woman going through an acrimonious divorce. Rooney Mara is the bright-eyed aspiring photographer who falls for her. Set in the 1950s, Carol is a beautiful, heartbreaking film about two women who find love in a hopeless (and deeply homophobic) place. Also sad: There’s nowhere near enough representation of queer romance in movies; and when it is present, it’s often depicted as a forbidden affair. So while Carol is a wonderful movie, also consider supporting films that depict a more joyful experience like these. Available to stream on Netflix

Number 2: 500 Days of Summer

Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), greeting-card writer and hopeless romantic, is caught completely off-guard when his girlfriend, Summer (Zooey Deschanel), suddenly dumps him. However, a car wreck changes everything in an instant, and now Mia’s life hangs in the balance. Suspended between life and death, Mia faces a choice that will decide her future.

Number 5: Titanic

It’s a testament to how epic and sad Titanic is that people are still debating decades later whether or not Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) could have survived. For director James Cameron, it’s not even a question: “Had he lived, the ending of the film would have been meaningless,” Cameron told Vanity Fair. “The film is about death and separation; he had to die, It’s called art; things happen for artistic reasons, not for physics reasons.”

Number 6: Atonement

This sweeping English drama, based on the book by Ian McEwan, follows the lives of young lovers Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley) and Robbie Turner (James McAvoy). When the couple is torn apart by a lie constructed by Cecilia’s jealous younger sister, Briony (Saoirse Ronan), all three of them must deal with the consequences. Robbie is the hardest hit, since Briony’s deception results in his imprisonment, but hope for Cecilia and her beau increases when their paths cross during World War II.

Number 7: Malcolm & Marie

Zendaya and John David Washington play a couple on the brink of a breakup in this exhausting, emotional love story. “There is no true victor in their ongoing feud,” Glamour wrote in its review. “Most viewers won’t have to look much further than their own love life to know how it works out. Still, it’s entertaining watching them both try to walk away with the win.

Number 8: A Walk To Remember

Set in North Carolina, “A Walk To Remember” follows the rite of passage of a jaded, aimless high school senior (Shane West) who falls in love with a guileless young woman (Mandy Moore) he and his friends once scorned.
