Age Gap Romance Movies

We don’t often really care about age, but age differences bring in a lot of complexities to relationships and there are many films that have explored such relationships. Here’s a look at the list of top age gap romance movies ever where despite the age disparity, passions fly. You can watch some of these best age gap movies on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime.

Number 1: A Short Film About Love

‘A Short Film About Love’ is a film that has grown on me tremendously with time. The way Kieslowski manages to portray the sheer tenderness of love here is simply beyond words. The film explores the relationship between a teenage boy and an older promiscuous woman whom he spies on from his window. She does not believe in love and is way beyond the naivety of a teenager who thinks he’s in love but is only infatuated with her. She dismisses his feelings but later begins to see his love. The ‘Dekalog’ version of the film has a slightly better ending, in my opinion with the boy realizing that it was not love and just a mere sexual fantasy. This was far more powerful and tragic than the more fairytale-ish ending of the movie. However, it remains one of the greatest romantic films ever made.

Number 2: Three Colors

There is something so inexplicably magical about the way Kieslowski just strikes you on an emotional level. ‘Red’ was my first ever Kieslowski film and I was completely in awe of its beauty. The film depicts the relationship between a young woman and a cynical old judge who spies on the people around him by listening to their conversations. At first, their worlds seem vastly different but there’s something between them that would later develop into a deeply intimate bond. Their relationship isn’t explicitly romantic but you do get a feeling that they could be lovers and Kieslowski hints us with that in many scenes, most notably in that beautiful scene where Jean-Louis Trintignant’s character says goodbye to Valentine and they both place their hands on the car’s window before he drives away. It’s a simple scene but speaks volumes of the intimacy of their relationship.

Number 3: The Piano Teacher

It’s impossible to pen down a Michael Haneke film for such a short write-up. So let’s just get straight to the point. ‘The Piano Teacher’ explores a disturbing sexual relationship between a middle-aged piano teacher and her handsome young student. Erika’s mother controls her sexual life and this has turned her into a shattered soul with sadomasochistic fantasies including self-mutilation. Her tumultuous relationship with Walter changes radically and he becomes disgusted with her. This shatters Erika and she throws herself into the darkest abyss of human existence. ‘The Piano Teacher’ is a film that would disturb, devastate and move you in ways you haven’t been before.

Number 4: Lost in Translation

‘Lost in Translation is a sweetly melancholic tale of love, loneliness, and ennui. The film depicts the relationship between a middle-aged American actor and a much younger American woman who happen to meet in a hotel in Tokyo. They are seemingly lost in a world and culture so alien to them and begin to discover themselves in each other despite their age difference. These are two souls stuck in very different phases of life and yet they seem to have some sort of a connection between them. Their relationship seems platonic but it has a very ambiguous tone and we could never really know what Bob whispered in Charlotte’s ear and perhaps that’s the beauty of life. The beauty of the unknown.

Number 5: The Reader

‘The Reader’ tells the story of a boy who develops a sexual relationship with an older woman. They first meet when the boy feels sick while traveling in a tram and later meet up in her apartment where she seduces him and they make love. They begin to see each other more frequently in her apartment and she insists he reads literary works he’s studying after they make love every time. However, her past comes back to haunt her and this wrecks their relationship, leaving a lasting impact on the two. ‘The Reader’ is a gorgeously flawed masterpiece that so beautifully depicts an enigmatic relationship fraught with simmering rage and implosive madness.

Number 6: Copenhagen

This indie gem is a coming-of-age drama that tells the story of a young man who arrives at Copenhagen in order to discover the true identity of his father and his mysterious past. However, he feels stranded in an alien country and soon meets a young waitress who offers help as a guide and translator so that they can track down his grandfather’s address. Through their journey, they learn about themselves and each other and begin to develop strong feelings for each other but the man soon realizes that the woman he’s fallen in love with is a school-going kid, almost half his age. ‘Copenhagen’ is a memorable journey into discovering your frailties, weaknesses, fears, and how one person could bring about a magical change in our lives.

Number 7: As Good As it Gets

Age is just a number for the great Jack Nicholson. The man defines charisma and just oozes class here in every frame he’s in. He was 60 when he did this film but not for a moment did you feel any kind of awkwardness here when he was dating a 34-year-old Helen Hunt in the film. That’s what flamboyance and charisma are all about. ‘As Good As it Gets’ is a sweet little romantic comedy that tells the story of a misanthropic, annoying, obsessive-compulsive writer, played by Nicholson, who has to take care of his neighbor’s dog. He falls in love with a waitress, almost half his age, who is a single mother with a chronically ill son. The film beautifully establishes the characters and their relationships, taking its time to build the story. It’s wonderfully made with some fine performances by Nicholson and Hunt both of who won the Academy Award for Best Actor and Best Actress respectively.

Number 8: Lolita

Stanley Kubrick‘s bizarrely romantic black comedy-drama tells the story of a middle-aged man who is sexually attracted to a gorgeous teenager. Humbert is offered by a sexually frustrated widow to stay at her house which he initially declines but accepts it after he sees her teenage daughter. The film is certainly not on the level of Kubrick’s greatest works but is still an excellent work with a bizarrely eccentric tone that has always been one of Kubrick’s trademarks. The film was controversial for its bold subject and tone and wasn’t well-received by critics at the time but it has now developed a fan following among Kubrickian.

Number 9: Notes on a Scandal

A disturbing little film about a school teacher who falls for one of her teenage students. Soon, they both start having a passionate affair. But things get complex when an older teacher, who also romantic designs on her, and viciously exposes her for having an affair after blackmailing her for a time. Cate Blanchett is superb as the vulnerable teacher, knowing what she is doing is wrong, but then is stunned at the level of treachery the older woman, brilliantly played by Judi Dench who lashes out at her. It is a sensual film but it is also downright frightening at times.

Number 10: American Beauty

Perhaps a controversial pick. The relationship between Lester and Angela in ‘American Beauty’ isn’t really romantic. Lester is suffering from a mid-life crisis and is basically bored with his life. Out of this sheer nothingness in life, Lester gets infatuated with Angela, his teenage daughter’s best friend. Lester begins to fantasize about her in his dreams and you could feel a kind of sexual tension between the two. But the beauty of the story lies in how Lester’s seemingly absurd infatuation leads him into a gateway of his own self. He finds meaning in life, accepts hopelessness, and realizes what it really means to exist but perhaps it’s all too late now.

Historical Romance Movies

There’s something about historical romance movies that makes us swoon-maybe it’s because we love good corsets-but either way, it’s one of our favorite genres. Below are 10 of the best historical romance movies, from Jane Austen adaptations to medieval romances. But before please make sure to hit the like button and subscribe to black slate studios.

Number 1: Little Women

This 2019 film is an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel of the same name. A very modern take on the classic, this movie is a period film filled with nuanced women and thought-provoking monologues. Greta Gerwig’s film is a visual delight and uses color to go back and forth in time. Though the story mostly revolves around the female characters and their camaraderie, the movie does get its viewers invested in the many romantic entanglements. Special mention has to be given to Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet for their performances.

Number 2: Pride & Prejudice

This 2005 adaptation is based on Jane Austen’s novel of the same name. The love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy is one that is very popular. And it became all the more popular thanks to Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfayden’s incredible chemistry in performing these characters. This fresh take on the story shines because of Knightley’s performance as the strong-willed, charismatic Elizabeth Bennet who refuses to live by society’s expectations for her. This Romantic Period movie is delightful to watch and the characters are very endearing.

Number 3: Titanic

This 1997 modern classic flits back and forth from history to present in its storytelling. This epic romance of massive proportions draws viewers especially because of the wonderfully young and innocent love story between Jack and Rose played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. This James Cameron movie was nominated for 14 Academy Awards and won 11 of them. This movie intersperses history and fiction to create a love story that is now deeply embedded into pop culture. This love story crosses class barriers that are captured through instances like Jack’s attempts to socialize with the people in the first class, and Rose’s joy in dancing with the people in the third class.

Number 4: Sense And Sensibility

This 1995 adaptation of the Jane Austen novel of the same name was written by Emma Thompson, who stars in the movie as well. Ang Lee directs this Romantic Period movie that boasts of an extraordinary star cast including the likes of Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant, Hugh Laurie, and more. These highly skilled actors bring another dimension to this story and make it a very warm and relevant portrayal. The release of this movie also brought Jane Austen to a whole new generation of audiences, with more adaptations being successively made.

Number 5: Atonement

This 2007 film was based on Ian McEwan’s novel of the same name and was nominated for a variety of Academy Awards. With a strong cast including the likes of Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, Saoirse Ronan, Benedict Cumberbatch, and more, the movie was praised for their performances. The movie is a visual treat and the cinematography and soundtrack were also much appreciated. The viewers get invested in the love story of Cecilia and Robbie because of the chemistry of the actors Knightley and McAvoy, who play these characters respectively.

Number 6: Jane Eyre

This 2011 adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s novel of the same name is eerie and beautiful to watch. Mia Wasikowska breathes life into Jane Eyre and performs it with the tenderness, sensitivity, and sharpness that the role requires. Michael Fassbender plays the Byronic hero Edward Rochester with the rugged charm the role calls for. Their performance and chemistry turn this slow story into a very moving one. Viewers will be in a dilemma to root for their getting-together considering Rochester’s ex-wife Bertha Mason as well.

Number 7: The Great Gatsby

The 2013 adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel of the same name is a bright, colorful, exciting watch. This film adaptation has an extremely popular star cast with Leonardo DiCaprio, Toby Maguire, Cary Mulligan, Isla Fisher, and more.  This American classic of the doomed love story of Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan is captured with all of its dazzling embellishments. The contemporary and modern music score also adds to this film elevating it from a far-away period piece, to something that is quite modern.

Number 8: Shakespeare In Love

This 1998 Romantic Period film won 7 Oscars at the Academy Awards. The film plays with history and one of Shakespeare’s actual plays, Romeo and Juliet. This imaginary love story happens between Shakespeare, played by Joseph Fiennes, and Gwenyth Paltrow. The setting, the Shakespearean monologues, the dramatic tension, all provide for an exciting watch for viewers. This movie takes a lot of artistic freedom to create an enchanting and dramatic love story worthy of Shakespeare himself. Shakespeare in Love is incredibly funny and romantic and the actors perform their characters very well.

Number 9: The Age Of Innocence

Based on the novel of the same title written by Edith Wharton, this movie was directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Winona Ryder, and Michelle Pfeiffer among others, the actors bring to life Newland Archer, May Welland, and Ellen Olenska.

The chemistry between these actors, the different romantic entanglements are shown beautifully in this film. Quite different from the usual Scorsese fare, The Age of Innocence is elegant, romantic yet stylish. The movie is firm in its Period piece roots but still manages to engage modern viewers in its complicated story of love.

Number 10: Mansfield Park

This 1999 British movie is based on the novel of the same title written by Jane Austen. There are some deviations from the book and artistic licenses the movie takes. It is a more modern take with a cast that includes Frances O’Connor, Jonny Lee Miller, Anna Popplewell, James Purefoy, and more. Patricia Rozema’s take on the characters shows Fanny, not as a frail, shy girl but as a smart, quick-witted character. The chemistry between Fanny and Edmund is brilliant thanks to Frances and Jonny.

Romance Movies of 2019

If your current love life isn’t quite the fairy tale you’d like it to be, then 2019 has been full of movies that will fill that will make your heart flutter once again. And if you are lucky in love, well get ready to keep swooning. Here are the best romantic movies that came out in 2019. But before please make sure to hit the like button and subscribe to black slate studios.

Number 1: Falling In Love

In this cheesy yet delightful rom-com, Milian (who you might recognize from songs like “Dip It Low” or previous romantic comedies like Love Don’t Cost a Thing) plays Gabriela, a stressed-out businesswoman who gives it all up to move to a charming small town after she wins a “Win an Inn” contest. The catch? The inn is all the way in New Zealand. It’s there that she meets Jake (Demos), a contractor who just so happens to be available to help fix her inn and her heart. The plot is admittedly predictable, but there’s no denying there is something uniquely charming about Netflix’s original film.

Number 2: The Last Summer

This teen story will make you pine for your high school days. In The Last Summer, college-bound friends celebrate their final months together after high school, determining what their friendships—and love lives—will shape up to be in the future. It has all the rom-com hijinks you’d expect.

Number 3: Plus One

PEN15’s Erskine plays Alice, a 20-something-year-old wedding-goer who turns to her closest pal Ben (Quaid) for her plus-one to 10 summer nuptials. At first, they agree to platonically be each others’ wing-person, but by the middle of the film—you guessed it—they start to develop feelings for each other. It’s not the most original premise, but it works.

Number 4: The Sun Is Also a Star

Based on Nicola Yoon’s book of the same name, this touching story follows Natasha (Shahidi), a college-bound 20-something who ends up meeting Daniel (Melton) during a chance encounter in N.Y.C. city. While she has other priorities—like making sure her family doesn’t get deported to Jamaica—he ends up consuming quite a bit of her time.

Number 5: Under the Silver Lake

If you enjoy fictional characters that spend the bulk of the film cracking the code to a mystery, this one is for you. Under the Silver Lake follows Sam (Garfield), a 30-something-year-old man who abruptly meets Sarah (Keough) and ends up uncovering well-hidden secrets of Los Angeles after her disappearance.

Number 6: What Men Want

In this gender-swap remake, Henson takes on the role of Ali, a sports agent whose contributions are overlooked in favor of her male counterparts. But after Ali sips a cup of experimental tea, she develops the ability to hear the innermost thoughts of her male coworkers. Expect her to use her newfound gift on the fast-track up the sports ladder. The new comedy is adapted from the 2000s What Women Want featuring Mel Gibson.

Number 7: Isn’t It Romantic

Wilson stars as a cynical New York City architect named Natalie. Natalie hates everything about rom-com. But, ironically after suffering from a head injury, she wakes up as the leading lady in her very own personal romance story. True to form, there’s a love triangle with a handsome stranger (Hemsworth) and her best friend (DeVine). Of course, the film wouldn’t be complete without a choreographed flash mob scene.

Number 8: The Aftermath

The romance film is set in postwar Germany in 1946, with Knightley taking on the role of housewife Rachael Morgan. She and her husband, Lewis (Clarke), move into a new home with a widower (Skarsgård) and his daughter. And as the popular saying goes, the couple soon find out that three is definitely a crowd.

Number 9: Five Feet Apart

Say hello to 2019’s version of The Fault In Our Stars. Only this time, two ridiculously cute teenagers (Sprouse and Richardson) are suffering from cystic fibrosis rather than cancer. If you’re a sucker for young love thwarted by terminal illness, this one’s for you. Directed by Jane the Virgin actor Justin Baldoni, you’ll need to keep a box of tissues handy.

Number 10: The Perfect Date

Netflix found a star in Centineo with the success of 2018’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and here he plays a high school senior named Brooks who sells his services as a stand-in boyfriend in order to make Yale tuition money. He creates an app that also brings him closer to dating his dream girl (Mendes), but at the same time, he’s growing closer to his new client, Celia. The latest film in the pay-to-date-me genre (Can’t Buy Me Love, Easy A) doesn’t exactly break the mold, but fans of teen rom-coms will find lots to enjoy.
